Two basic species evolved in South Amer\u00adi\u00adca: the gua\u00adna\u00adco and the vicu\u00f1a. Both exist in the wild to this day. Fol\u00adlow\u00ading a major peri\u00adod of glacial melt\u00ading around 10,000 years ago, low-lying pas\u00adture land was flood\u00aded, forc\u00ading the ani\u00admals to move to high\u00ader regions. Here, they were fol\u00adlowed by humans, who began to domes\u00adti\u00adcate them. Archae\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal find\u00adings sug\u00adgest that it took a long time before these efforts were suc\u00adcess\u00adful \u2013 around 7,000 years ago. The lla\u00adma was bred from the gua\u00adna\u00adco as a beast of bur\u00adden and a source of meat. The hua\u00adcaya and the suri, with their dif\u00adfer\u00adent fibres and colours, were bred from the vicu\u00f1a.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocksatz\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Incas mas\u00adtered the art of breed\u00ading alpacas, achiev\u00ading an unri\u00advalled lev\u00adel of per\u00adfec\u00adtion. In the hey\u00adday of the Inca Empire, alpacas were pure in colour. The fleece was equal to that of the vicu\u00f1a in terms of fine\u00adness. The diam\u00ade\u00adter was sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly below 15 microns, which is rare nowa\u00addays. Suris were the exclu\u00adsive reserve of the noble class\u00ades. How\u00adev\u00ader, the Span\u00adish con\u00adquest had a dra\u00admat\u00adic impact on the peo\u00adple and ani\u00admals liv\u00ading in South Amer\u00adi\u00adca. With\u00adin a sin\u00adgle cen\u00adtu\u00adry, almost 95% of the pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion as well as a sim\u00adi\u00adlar pro\u00adpor\u00adtion of indige\u00adnous camelids were wiped out, either direct\u00adly or indi\u00adrect\u00adly through disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocksatz\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the fol\u00adlow\u00ading 500 years, the sur\u00adviv\u00ading ani\u00admals con\u00adtin\u00adued to evolve in a pro\u00adtect\u00aded area of refuge called the Alti\u00adplano, a high plateau in the area con\u00adnect\u00ading Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Inter\u00adbreed\u00ading with lla\u00admas result\u00aded in genet\u00adic hybrids, which now account for about 80% of all alpacas. This com\u00adpro\u00admised the puri\u00adty of the&nbsp;fibre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blocksatz lastPara\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the ear\u00adly 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, the alpaca has expe\u00adri\u00adenced a renais\u00adsance. Accord\u00ading to cur\u00adrent esti\u00admates, there are approx\u00adi\u00admate\u00adly 3.5 mil\u00adlion ani\u00admals in Peru today, com\u00adpris\u00ading around 80% of the glob\u00adal alpaca pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion. We there\u00adfore treat our alpacas as a rare and valu\u00adable com\u00admod\u00adi\u00adty.
